Cutting Board Care
Cutting boards are an essential tool in any kitchen, but they require proper care and maintenance to ensure they last a long time. In this blog post, we will discuss how to clean and condition your cutting board to keep it in top shape.
Cleaning your cutting board
To clean your cutting board, start by washing it with mild dish soap and warm water. Use a soft sponge or brush to gently scrub the surface, paying extra attention to any stains or leftover food particles. After washing, rinse the board thoroughly with clean water to remove any soap residue.
Drying your cutting board
Once you have washed your cutting board, it's essential to dry it properly to prevent any moisture from lingering and causing damage. Use a clean towel to dry the board immediately, making sure to wipe both sides and any crevices or edges. After towel drying, let the cutting board air dry standing up or on a raised rack with air flow.
Conditioning your cutting board
To keep your cutting board in good condition, we recommend conditioning it once a month. Conditioning helps to replenish any natural oils that may have been lost during use, preventing the board from drying out and cracking. Here's how to condition your cutting board:
Step 1: When your cutting board is thoroughly dry, apply 100% Food Grade Mineral Oil directly onto the surface of the board. You can use a clean cloth or paper towel to apply the oil, making sure to cover the entire surface. Let the oil soak into the cutting board for at least a few hours or overnight if possible.
Step 2: After the mineral oil has soaked in, apply a small amount of Butcher Block Conditioner. Using a soft cloth, rub the conditioner into the wood in a circular pattern. It's not necessary to let the wax soak into the board, as it will provide a protective layer on the surface.
What not to do
To ensure your cutting board stays in good condition, it's essential to avoid some common mistakes. Here are a few things not to do:
- Don't put the board in the dishwasher, as the high heat and water pressure can cause the board to warp or crack.
- Don't let the board stand in water, as it can cause the wood to absorb moisture and lead to mold growth.
- Don't use bleach or other harsh chemicals, as they can damage the wood and leave a strong odor.
- Don't put a wet board flat when drying. Instead, dry immediately with a towel and let it air dry standing up or on a raised rack with air flow.
By following these simple steps, you can keep your cutting board in great shape and ensure it lasts for years to come. Happy cooking!
